Windmills and Cologne

We stayed up to watch our departure from the dock in Amsterdam. There was another river cruise boat docked near us and the light and the water reflection was amazing. It makes the lower windows look like there's a swimming pool inside.

Sleeping on this ship is lovely. Our room is much larger than I anticipated and is larger than several of the hostels we stayed at.

Awoke the next morning to the Kinderdijk which is an outdoor windmill museum.

These windmills have a cap that turns. There was one windmill on site that the entire windmill turns. We weren't able to see that one since it was under repair.

This is how they turn the turret to adjust the blades to catch the wind

Love the lighting on this

Actually got the blade in a shot. It was spinning at 60 RPM

We left the Kinderdijk and sallied that afternoon. We were told that there was Noah's Ark near Rotterdam. As we were sitting on the sun deck, this is what we suddenly saw:

Fyep, we passed the ark! It seems that one man has spent a little over ten years building this and now it is some sort of museum or animal attraction. Cool, isn't it.

Have been meeting the neatest folks from all over the US. A few folks from England, Australia and New Zealand but most Americans - from all over - Montana, California, Florida, Ohio, North and South Carolina, just to mention a few.

This morning we arrived in Cologne and toured the Dom (cathedral). While it is an amazing church from the outside, I have to admit that the inside leaves something to be desired. Beautiful stained glass and the tomb of the three wise men. The rest of the church is rather stark and cold.

Passed, these houses as we walked to the Lindt Chocolate Museum.

After touring the church, several of us took off on our own. We went to the Haxenhaus for lunch and beer and Ernie got to have roasted pig knuckle. He's been waiting to get to Germany for this. Unfortunately, we are still a little too far north to get a large selection of the German pretzels (bretzen) but we will keep our eyes open for them. Oh we also went to the Lindt Chokolade Museum. They make the best chocolate!

Tomorrow we go to our first castle so more photos tomorrow

Sleep tight!
