Marksburg Castle

Finally have somewhat dependable connectivity so I'll have a try at catching up on the last five days - probably in several postings. Heads up - more photos than blah-blah-blah.

So, Marksburg Castle is a little over eight hundred years old! It stands on a very steep, isolated hill in the bend of the river. I know it is very steep because we had to climb up it! Notice I didn't say walk up it! Ernie of course used his favorite word several times - and rightly so!

The best part was that we got to tour all of the castle but the keep. There was one turret we had to walk up and the circular staircase, with a rope railing, was so narrow that Ernie's shoulders brushed each wall. It was amazing!

This was our guide holding the key to the outside gate of the castle. Really the key! She used it to let us in.
This was inside the castle. The climb up was steeper but on even stones.

The black room sticking out of the castle is the under side of the potty. Yes the potty emptied directly into the moat - now our walkway
These bellows were used to transfer wine

The light in this castle was fantastic!
Part of the kitchen
Again, the lighting was superb!

This is the potty and it dumps directly into the moat.

This is the only entrance to the keep where The Lord and his family went to when the castle was under attack

The next few photos are in the torture chamber. Such a delightful thought!

This little guy greeted us when we exited the castle.

We actually got to the dock before the ship because she was held up in a lock. We actually disembarked in Koblenz and the ship picked us up in Braubach.

That afternoon we sailed on the Upper Middle Rhine which was declared a Unesco World Heritage site in 2002. Oh well, another world heritage site! More photos of all the castles in the next posting.
